Why do people up north think that southerns are die-hard Christians?

I disagree, I am from the south and almost everyone I know is an in-betweener. Most have Christian leanings, but they aren't holy rollers....Everytime I see those crazy uber religious southern stereo types portrayed in the media I wonder where they are.
