Why wont my xbox 360 allow me to set the picture to 1080p?

I have an xbox 360 elite hooked up with an hdmi to my 42" samsung flatscreen. When I go into settings from the xbox dashboard I am allowed to choose any picture setting (720p, 1080i, etc.) except for 1080p. It makes the computer noise thing when I try to choose it.
