What does a red herring mean in Science terms?

I have science homework for tuesday and i'm doing it right now, It comes up with things nothing to do with science, meaning I don't understand ANY OF IT !. I'm 12, don't get it, please give me some understandable definitions, or tell me a website that I will be able to understand for my age, thanks :)
